It was both a pleasure and real insight to work for Whisper TV as part of their coverage for Roland Garros 2025.
Throughout the fortnight, I fulfilled a few roles. I was really happy to be able to mix up roles as it gave me more of an introduction to roles I haven’t been able to experience yet.
I started the fortnight as a Press Conference Logger. It was a fairly repetitive task (!) but great to be able to understand another piece of software that we used to clip all pressers up.
My role then shifted to being a ‘Behind the Scenes Spotter’. The team became aware that, sadly for me because it means I have no life…, I knew a lot of tennis players’ names that were playing the tournament. One production gallery was responsible for the behind the scenes filming and editorial. This meant that all the best action from the gym, the corridors and the arrivals gates was being captured by us and sent to the editorial team and producers to clip up to send out on the world feed if it was good enough content! By the end of the week, I became fairly good at picking out players just by seeing their left side for about 5 seconds! All jokes aside, it was incredible to see how much is being filmed at these events to try and improve the coverage for people watching at home.
My final couple of days allowed me to sit with the Review Film Team. This team of 5 or 6 was responsible for producing an hour-long programme at the end of the tournament to summarise the main storylines and best bits.
I really enjoy my editing, and have done a lot of editing on Adobe Premiere Pro over the last year, so to see experts in the field do their thing and to see the process they do it in was superb.
I was able to assist this team by finding storylines they may not have found yet and by picking out crazy hot shots they may not have seen.
A huge thank you to the Whisper TV team for their hospitality at the Ealing Broadcast Centre. I very much hope to be back.
