My first time at the 'Happy Slam' down under. It was a pleasure to join the Bolt6 team as a Broadcast Tennis Analyst working on Channel 9's World Wide of Sports TV coverage.
I loved every minute of this job at Melbourne Park. It was a great opportunity to get my teeth stuck into the tactics of Grand Slam tennis matches. I have no doubt that all those training sessions and match days as a junior and at US College aided me in my performance!
Working closely with Channel 9's commentators including Todd Woodbridge, Jim Courier, John Millman, Jelena Dokic, Sam Stosur, Casey Dellacqua and Alicia Molik, the main parts of the job were to offer insights, tactical trends and lower third graphics that would help tell the story of the match. Short, clear and concise messaging on talkback to the commentators was crucial, as they have a lot going on in the heads when they are on air. This meant that if I felt I had a relevant and interesting stat to share, I had to sell it to the commentators and the director quickly and clearly.
Channel 9 were a great team to work with. They were innovative with their broadcast production and it was fascinating to sit next to their AR (augmented reality) team in the Broadcast Centre. The AR team, working with Channel 9 directors, certainly added an extra flair to the Morning and Evening Shows. Not only this, but it was invaluable to see the inner workings of a sports show production, especially having come from my Sports Broadcast studies at Cardiff Met. I'm hoping to take the good and bad of what I saw to help me in my own development as a Sports Broadcaster.
A huge thank you to Bolt6 for having me on the team. I am looking forward to seeing their continued progress in the sports technology and data industry, both in tennis and other sports.
I'll leave you with an example (see below) of a Full Frame Graphic that I produced during Carlos Alcaraz's 3rd Round encounter against Nuno Borges of Portugal. This was worked on with John Millman who speaks over it superbly on air.
